When I first started working at Fox News Channel in NYC back in 2008 the idea of producing video just for the internet was pretty shiny and new. I had been working in local TV for years  producing live newscasts. Then I landed a great job at Fox News as a health producer. My job was working for the dot com, not directly for the television channel. Instead everything we produced would be given to TV to run if they wanted – not the other way around.

When I tried booking guests for our segments I got push back.

“Wait, this isn’t going to be on TV?”

No one really understood the power of the internet back then. Now we know it’s actually so much better to have your segment run on the web because then it lives forever and could be shared over and over again!

On TV it’s there and gone and if someone misses it – oh well!

There were a few short-sided experts who actually turned down a big media opportunity with a Fox News entity because they were snobs.

Now everyone gets the value of having a segment live on a station’s website – the sharing power is amazing.

MEDIA BEGETS MEDIA

Now that I’m working with experts, authors and entrepreneurs on media training and strategy I always tell them “Don’t be a snob!” It’s one of my key principles.

Don’t turn your nose up at a media opportunity because you never know where it will lead.

In fact – media begets more media. Where do you think producers and editors are looking for guests? In the media of course. In fact many producers will search for ideas or articles online so an easily searchable web article could get you more exposure than a TV spot!

JAY NIXON ISN’T A SNOB

My client Jay Nixon is the perfect example of this.

We worked together for on a pitch idea that he sent over to Health.com.

It was about the words you use and how they can actually sabotage your waistline. The editor loved the idea and interviewed him for a story on their website.

He could have easily said “It’s not going to be in the magazine?” and turned away the opportunity.

But he didn’t do that and guess what?

A few months later – it actually DID get printed in the magazine because the editors liked the story so much.

What a nice win!

His message has reached so many more people because he was open about getting coverage.

Be like Jay Nixon. Get more media coverage that way.
