On the flight from NYC to San Francisco I watched Won’t You Be My Neighbor? You know, the documentary about Mister Rogers?
As a kid I loved that show.
But I also loved this documentary and one of the unexpected lessons was about video and television!
When Mister Rogers said “television is community,” I thought yes, that’s it!
I’m always saying that sharing your message is a public service. And it truly is.
Think about all the children’s lives (mine included) that were changed because Mister Rogers spoke directly to them about things they were curious about.
Imagine if you could do the same thing?
Yes, you can create your own community and serve the people in it right now.
So are you doing it?
What videos have you done?
And don’t feel embarrassed (like Daniel the tiger) if you didn’t do anything yet.
Here’s what I want you to do:
- Make a list of all the videos you’d like to do in 2020. (Bonus points if you make a spread sheet!)
- Look at that list and circle the ones that are unique to you. Meaning, which ones can you give your own special spin so it’s not generic.
- Pick one of those videos.
- Write out a few notes about what you’d like to say.
I know sometimes it can be scary to get started. But it’s important to remember and go back to why you’re doing this in the first place. It’s to help people! People can’t be helped if you don’t share what you know.
Something else that Mr. Rogers said that resonated with me is this quote:
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”
