It seems like everyone has a podcast these days. So…what’s your excuse?

I know, I know, it can be scary to start something new. But it’s also fun and exciting.

So if you’ve got an idea for a podcast that you’ve been waiting to share, take this blog post all about Creating Your Own Podcast as your sign to start. I spoke with author, speaker, and host of the podcast, The Good Life Coach (which ranked in the top 1.5% of the most popular shows globally), Michele Lamoureux on my live-streaming show Inside Scoop all about how to get started.

Here are three highlights from our conversation.

1) You don’t need a big audience to get started.

It’s easy to launch a podcast if you’re already an influencer on a social media platform or a celebrity. But you don’t need to be!

“When I started, I had no audience or mailing list. I was literally starting from scratch. Just a concept,” Michele said.

And that’s because as you’re building your own network, the people you bring onto your podcast will have audiences of their own.

“Tap your network,” she added.

One of Michele’s first guests was Lisa Genova, bestselling author of Still Alice, who was introduced to her through a friend.

“A lot of people won’t come on your show when it’s brand new because they don’t know if it’s going to last. But Lisa liked the concept of what I was launching, and now she’s been on my show also three times,” Michele said.

I’ve actually been a guest on Michele’s show three times too! Each one was a blast. We talked about productivity, procrastination and even how to get media. Check those episodes out here.

2) Make your show easy to say yes to.

Whether reaching out to people you’ve met, a friend of a friend, or doing a completely cold outreach, make your asks thoughtfully.

“Write really thoughtful emails when you’re doing outreach. Don’t do a copy and paste, cookie cutter kind of thing,” Michele said.

I like to send a suggested time to come on Inside Scoop when I email guests about the show so scheduling is even easier.

“People want to share their stories. You can also say, let’s do twenty or thirty minutes. You can make it easier to say yes to,” she added.

3) Starting with a broad idea will be your friend.

Sometimes what prevents you from getting started is not knowing what you want your show to be about! Michele suggests asking yourself these questions:

  • Why do you want a show?
  • Why now?
  • Who do you want to reach?

Those questions will help you start figuring out what you want to share and who you want to reach. Then you can start planning your content!

The beauty of having your own show is that you are the producer. You get to create it and put it out into the world,” Michele said.

It can be anything you want! So no more excuses, get started and get your message out there! If you’re looking for more tips, watch our entire conversation here.
