As you know, I’m a former television producer so I love video. I’ve been talking about it for years and people are finally catching on and understanding what a powerful tool it can be. And one of the most powerful (and newer) video driven social media apps is Tik Tok.
I have to admit I’m mostly a TikTok stalker. I have not created one thing on it. (Yet! My guest has inspired me to get started.)
I brought expert TikTok-er, author and speaker, Selena Rezvani, on my live-streaming show Inside Scoop to teach us how to grow your audience with TikTok. She has nearly 200,000 followers.
Here are Selena’s top five tips for getting started on TikTok.
(Don’t worry, none of the tips are about dancing!)
1) Share What You Know.
You can’t always predict what people are going to be interested in. So don’t worry about going viral. Share what you know.
Selena’s video about taking Paid Time Off (PTO) recently went viral. And was picked up by Buzzfeed!
“Taking vacation time at your job doesn’t sound necessarily hot and exciting. But what more deeply struck a nerve was this employer-employee contract kind of changing. The social contract and the respect between employers and employees,” Selena said.
For years and years as a television producer, we would do stories that we thought everyone would love and would be amazing. And then there was nothing. Crickets. And then the stuff that we assumed everybody knew, got so much more traction.
“Use your audience as a compass. But not for everything. If you get too focused on making it about them and not sharing what you yourself find interesting or value adding, there can be an over-emphasis. So there needs to be a balance,” Selena advised.

2) Don’t Worry About Being Perfect.
You won’t be comfortable and confident on video – until you’re used to being on video.
“TikTok is actually a place where it’s really okay for you to find and hone your voice with practice. That authenticity, casualness, and openness is really sought after on TikTok,” Selena shared.
We’re not saying forego makeup and be brushing your teeth in the morning in your video. It doesn’t have to be that either. (Or do it, if that’s what you want to do!) It’s about showing up how you feel comfortable and in a way that is true to you.
“Be you. I really love color. It is part of my daily joy and happiness both to wear it, to surround myself with it in my office. It makes me feel more creative, more bold and daring,” Selena said.
So that’s how Selena shows up in her videos – with lots of color. No matter what she is discussing.
3) Listen to Your Audience.
Once you start posting more videos and getting comments. Start listening to the comments from your audience.
“Look for the emotion in the comments. It’s one way to tell what is suiting people, or what’s exciting them. What’s making them feel really seen. It will help you have more of a compass for what’s exciting, what’s bubbling among your community,” Selena said.
Trolls can sometimes make reading the comments hard. But don’t listen to them! Listen to the audience that is truly engaging in your content to see what topics you should think about next or if anything you’ve posted needs clarification. Don’t forget why you’re doing this after all – to be of service!

4) Consistent Creation.
Like anything you do, consistency is key. And when creating TikTok videos, consistency in the amount you post and the length you post is helpful.
“TikTok videos are like a little past hors d’oeuvres at a party. Shrink way down to one delicious bite that’s small and simple that’s 30 seconds long,” Selena added.
She recommends doing three, 30 second videos every day when you’re starting out. But do what feels right for you and what you can maintain in your schedule.

5) Don’t Think About Fame. Think About Community.
Sharing your expertise is a public service. So if you’re just trying to get famous people can sense it and you’ll have a very frustrating experience. But if you’re sharing information to help people, you’ll appeal to more people and have a better time creating.
“A lot of us are thirsty for connection and feeling socially isolated. TikTok can help you find friendship and fellowship in communities like this and it’s pretty awesome,” Selena said.
